The rise: The World Cup 2011 Glory
In 2011, The ICC International World Cup, he was at the peak of his career. He was named as Player of the tournament, having 362 wickets and 15 wickets, he played a crucial role in helping India to lift the World Cup after 28 years. Behind the glory of winning a World cup in cricket, he was secretly suffering from serious health concerns, which includes breathlessness, nausea and persistent cough.
While no one knew at that time, not even Yuvraj himself, that he was secretly fighting and suffering from a rare form of cancer.
The Cancer Diagnosis: Mediastina seminoma
After the World Cup celebrations ended, He underwent several medical tests that revealed he had Mediastinal Seminoma, which is a rare form of cancer located between the lungs. While his cancer diagnosis has shocked the sports world along with his friends and family.
For Yuvraj Singh, it was devastating news to hear, as he was only 30 years old, at the peak of his career. And suddenly diagnosed with a life-threatening, rare disease. But instead of succumbing to fear and uncertainty about his treatments, he chose to fight just like a fighter!
The Cancer Battle: Cancer Treatment in the US
He has moved to the US for his further cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, and underwent three cycles of chemotherapy at the Cancer Research Institute in Boston and later in Indianapolis. Throughout his cancer treatments, he felt weak, and his hair fell out, and he lost weight, but still his spirit remained unshaken.
During his treatments, he read the autobiography of Lance Armstrong, ‘It’s not about the Bike,’ which gave him hope and inspiration to go ahead with his treatments. He has spoken in his several interviews that ‘if Lance could do it, so can I too.’ He has also received immense support from his family and friends and fellow cricket players around the world.
The Great Comeback: Returning Back to the Cricket
In March 2012, after undergoing months of intense treatments like three cycles of chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free. But according to him, he wasn’t done yet, he wants to return where he actually belongs: the cricket field!
Just a few months later, in September 2012, he made an emotional comeback to International cricket in a T20 match against New Zealand. Al though, the comeback was not easy and he had to work harder than usual, to regain his fitness and never give up.
Over the next few years, he continued to represent India internationally in both ODIs and T20Is, including the 2014 T20 World Cup. His presence on the cricket field was indeed a symbol of triumph over extreme adversity.
Off the field: Inspiring Millions of Peoples across the world
Yuvraj’s journey of cancer treatments has inspired millions across the world. In 2012, he launched a nonprofit organization called the YouWeCan Foundation, aimed at spreading cancer awareness and helping people who are financially weak with early detection and timely cancer treatments. The foundation has helped thousands of people across India.
Apart from launching his nonprofit organization, he also wrote his autobiography, titled ‘The Test of My Life.’ In this book, he has expressed his cancer healing journey and his fears, struggles, and ultimate comebacks to international cricket.

The Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh retired from international cricket in June 2019. His on-field achievements are celebrated throughout the country, while his off-field fight against a rare germ cell tumor made him a real-life hero.
