Side effects: What to watch out for

These medications contain potent agents, and they come with a wide range of possible side effects. Many side effects of these tablets are manageable. Some side effects can appear more serious and complex and require immediate medical attention.

Here are more some common frequent side effects, including:

• Fatigue, weakness
• Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Headache and dizziness
• Rash and skin irritation
• Changes in blood counts

These tablets are not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding and increase the risk for your unborn baby.

If you start to experience symptoms such as shortness in breath, chest pain, swelling of a leg, rashes starts to spread rapidly, or severe infection signs such as fever, continuous sore throat, then consult with a physician immediately.

How to take it?

Take the capsule exactly as prescribed by your doctor (dose & schedule). Also, try not to change or stop without discussing it with your doctor. These may be with or without consulting your physician. 

These drugs are taken with or without food. But try to take them at the same time each day for consistency, to get effective results. Try to swallow these drugs as a whole, but do not crush or chew them either.

While if you are on treatment, follow these :

• Perform all scheduled blood tests and medical appointments, which includes monitoring your vitals such as blood counts, organ function, and clot risk.
• Try to stay hydrated, eat a healthy, balanced diet, and avoid injuries or activities that increase bleeding risk if your platelet levels are low.
• Try to avoid close contact with people who get sick (cold/flu) because your immune system may be compromised.
• Always stay alert for signs of side effects: dizziness, blurred vision (do not drive until you know how you feel)
• Avoid the consumption of alcohol or at least discuss it with your doctor. Some sources often mention caution with alcohol when taking this drug.

Key note for special groups:

• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: These drugs are highly potent and contraindicated in pregnancy due to its risk of birth defects. During the intake of these drugs  breastfeeding is generally discouraged. 
• Kidney & liver impairment: In these health conditions, the dose might need some adjustment, use it with caution and consult your doctor. 
• Children & adolescents: These drugs are not recommended for use in children under age 18 years (safety not established in many indications)
